Hands down the best Arancini I think I have ever eaten! Our visit to Kinky Swell Café did not disappoint – if confit duck, French toast with balsamic glaze, crispy bacon in brioche buns and giant bowls of coffee sound like they’re up your alley – it won’t disappoint you either 😀
So this Sunday was at least half of what I would define as my “perfect day”. Have you ever thought about what your perfect day would be? Mine would start with a swim in the ocean, greeting the day with cool salty water, waves and sun. It would then follow with an awesome brunch and coffee, my time spent with family and friends. Well this weekend, that’s exactly what I was lucky enough to do. We started the day meeting at Scarborough beach for a bit of bodyboarding and then headed up the road to Kinky Swell Café for breakfast.
There’s nothing quite like the fresh feeling after an ocean swim while we waited for our coffees to arrive. And check out the size of them! I’m pretty sure these are some of the biggest coffees in a mug (soup bowl?) in Perth!
Kinky Swell offers an impressive menu with dishes such as their Lamb Rosti, Cauliflower and Chia Rice Cakes and Eggs Benedict with Confit Duck. If there isn’t anything that takes your fancy on the menu there is also a range of delicious items in the display fridge and a list of tempting weekly specials (like their Breakfast Nachos or Grilled Lemongrass Pork Chop with broken rice, a fried egg and pickled vegetables). You certainly couldn’t accuse them of being boring and it was a hard task deciding what to order!
The Swells Benedict (with two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce on toasted sourdough with pulled confit duck) was a clear winner with three of us ordering it. The duck was tender and salty sweet, a lovely rich meat to match the eggs and sourdough bread. One of my friends is an avid runner so added smashed avocado and mushrooms to her order – now that’s the way to re-fuel post run!
Some people just can’t make a decision but that works perfectly with my group of friends haha (sharing is caring and also means you get to taste all the things!). Two friends decided to share the Bacon & Egg Roll (soft fried egg, crispy bacon, melted tasty cheese & chipotle mayo in a toasted brioche bun) and I went halves in one of the Chicken Mushroom and Lemongrass Arancini balls from the display fridge.
The egg was gooey and the bacon crispy, soaking into that deliciously soft and sweet brioche bun. The arancini was crisply coated with a super cheesy and flavour-packed inside! No joke, this arancini was probably one of the best I have ever tasted. I often find risotto and arancini balls can run the risk of being quite bland but the chefs at Kinky Swell know how to pack the flavour in! I think next time I will just be ordering two of these and a cup (bowl) of coffee <3
Another offering from the display fridge was the Creamy Chicken Crepe. Light crepe exterior with a creamy chicken and vegetable interior reminiscent of a pie filling; “it’s definitely creamy” was the feedback from my friend haha. She definitely enjoyed it!
Finally, the French Toast (gluten free as Kinky Swell were awesome enough to swap it); it came with bacon, raspberry compote, mascarpone, salted cashew nuts and balsamic glaze – yum!!! I’ve never had balsamic glaze on French toast but I found the slight vinegary taste balanced well against the sweetness of the rest of the dish. The bacon was described as being crispy on the menu so I was a bit surprised to find it hiding underneath the mascarpone – it was delicious, but I would have preferred it slightly to the side or on top of the dish so it retained its crispiness (that is after all, my favourite part about bacon). If you’re after a sweet and decadent breakfast, but something that isn’t going to leave you feeling sickly, I highly recommend this dish.
And so ended the first half of my perfect day. Beautiful beach followed by an awesome breakfast with friends! I can’t wait to head back to Kinky Swell and try something else off the menu or from the specials board (with another of those arancini of course)! We’re so lucky in WA to have experiences like this right at our fingertips. Make 2018 the year to discover what your perfect day is. Get out and explore what your local area has to offer and try something new – even if that is just a new dish!
